Can Upload But Cannot Check In In Windchill

Whether y'all're reading this proactively, or looking into workspace issues for performance or stability, I'll lay out some recommendations on how to leverage the workspace within Windchill more effectively.

What Makes a Workspace?

What is a workspace within Windchill, really? Information technology is a tabular view of new and existing information that is applicative to the focused task yous have on your To-Do list. It replaces the 'Working Directory' when connected to Windchill. Nearly often, though, information technology is used to create and change CAD information with Creo Parametric or other supported CAD applications via Workgroup Managing director (WGM). The workspace tin also be used to manipulate Enterprise Parts and other objects inside Windchill.

Figure 1 – A view of the Creo/WGM workspace

Here's where things will differ for everyone. Workspaces are dispensable and should exist treated every bit such. You may find that for the all-time functioning you will need to replace or recreate a workspace after 2 weeks – or you might find that yous can become nigh 2 months.

This depends on:

  • The total number of workspaces you have – The fewer the better. As a job or change is completed, Bank check-In and delete the workspace. This has the potential to impact interaction between Creo/WGM and the server.
  • How many objects you take in those workspaces – Hither over again, the fewer the objects the better. The products that nosotros all design are varied and every bit such is their complexity – from locks to motorcycles to ketchup bottle to generators, etc. Bring into your workspace the items you intend to modify as well equally those it may potentially bear on. As a result, the number of objects will increment. This has the potential to bear on interaction betwixt Creo/WGM and the server.
  • How often the metadata is churning – How often practice yous Check-In? Upload? Update? Re-Add together existing? All these transactions need to be kept track of on your workstation by Creo/WGM. This is interdependent on the side by side point of crashing. Equally you lot launch Creo/WGM, it will compare notes with the server. If it's taking a long fourth dimension, the software is trying to reconcile a discrepancy and there may just be a big number of objects to review, and/or there may be some corruption. Your best course of action is to wait for it to complete then Cheque-In what yous want or at the least Upload.

Keeping the number of workspaces and the objects within to a minimum of what you lot need as well every bit regularly changing them over are important to workspace wellness and optimal functioning. How oftentimes does Creo/WGM crash? Part of what happens when you close out Creo/WGM is that it makes certain all the metadata is put abroad properly. When the software closes abruptly, this doesn't happen and will need to be reconciled when it'southward launched next.

Viewing Workspace Content

Within your workspace, the 'Object Listing' tin can be tailored to your liking. This can be somewhat of a balancing human activity between convenience and performance. It'south groovy to accept everything all together at once and non accept to change where you are to find another bit of information. Equally time progresses, technology is faster, smarter, and overall meliorate – Significant you need to get things done on tighter timeframes, then you demand Windchill to movement as fast as possible. You can impact how this plays out for y'all past get-go controlling the breadth of what is shown in the workspace. The selection is very binary in that y'all tin pick all or some. This is highlighted with the #1 in Effigy 2.

  • 'As a list' – This one is direct forward in that it will display all things that have been added into your workspace.
  • 'Equally a featured objects list' – I've found this one useful every bit information technology helps me to focus on what I'm impacting. This volition prove the object(south) you initially selected, created new, and modified in the workspace. A workspace of 20,000+ objects can be reduced to less than ten or one hundred – depending on what is being done. All the objects are still in that location and are retrievable from Creo/WGM.

The columns shown for the objects that are listed are controlled by the different 'Tabular array Views'. The available list of views is noted with the #2 in Figure two. There are a handful of views provided by default and whatsoever number can be created by you or your arrangement administrators. The biggest difference is administrators can create views that others will be able to see and utilise.

The fewer number of columns displayed will result in a faster refresh. When creating your ain view from one that already exists and y'all need to add together a cavalcade, then find one that you could remove. If this is unavoidable, then use that view sparingly and be patient.

Save vs Upload vs Check-In

Relieve – A new re-create of the object is saved to the local workspace. The local workspace is often on the c-drive of your CAD workstation. This updated copy of your CAD file only exists in the local workspace a.k.a. just on your computer. The specific path is configurable and will differ from company to company.

Upload – As well as a new copy of the object saved to the local workspace a new copy is saved to the server-side workspace. This re-create is only visible to the person who created information technology merely is now accessible in a stand-lonely browser as well equally any other CAD workstation you might have access to. This is a 'back-up' copy.

Check-In – During this process a salve to the local workspace and the server-side workspace are completed followed by making a re-create into Windchill Commonspace. At this point it is now visible and bachelor for download to those that have the necessary access.

A 'What if' Scenario or Can't Check-Out

PTC introduced an expansion to the 'Universal Upload' functionality for Windchill 10.2 F000. For more than details, please reference Windchill x.2 F000 What'south New. This enhancement allows for an object that is modified but not Checked-Out to be able to be uploaded. For those times when you may need to meet how or if something volition work but what yous need is already Checked-Out or under change. A word of caution – retrieve to update to the latest once it is available to Check-Out or you may revert changes made from the terminal Bank check-In.

Effigy 4 – Modified and eligible for upload but not Checked-Out

Lastly, I recommend working with your organization administrator, too as experimenting with your specific situation earlier making large changes. This is applicable to the embedded browser of Creo Parametric, the 3rd Party CAD Workgroup Director embedded browser, too as the stand up-lonely browser.
